I think it's high time that I share our kitchen remodel. It seems like it was decades in the making, although that can't be possible since we haven't been in this house for even 2 years.
Sanctuary Art's "
You Should Have Seen It Before" party seems like the perfect opportunity for some show and tell.

This is how we lived for the first 6 months. It was definitely livable, but it was lacking a bit in the style area. Oh, it was also lacking a dishwasher. I know my mom is thinking, "Cry me a river!" But I'm sorry, once you have one, there's no going back. Unless you buy this house, and then there
is going back. And you will mutter hateful things under your breath every afternoon and every evening as you wash dishes.

To make matter worse, we
had a dishwasher, there was just no way to hook it up. So we parked it smack dab next to the refrigerator and got back to counting our blessings.

The four of us ate dinner every night at that tiny table, and I do kind of miss that.
To get our kitchen started, we had to basically gut it, then have portions of a wall re-plastered, then get to painting. We used Morning Fog D61-1 by Olympic, found at Lowes.

Although my first choice in cabinetry was white, we had the opportunity to snag solid wood cream cabinets for 75% off, and sometimes reality just can't be ignored. Totally worth it.

See that little jammy guy? He is here to illustrate that we did, indeed, live like this for nearly a month. No kitchen sink, people. But I was thrilled when I was at least able to move the food out of our bedroom and back into the kitchen - countertops or not!

At last, one glorious day, it was finished.

In full disclosure, it took an additional year to put the floor in. We were committed to paying as we went and not going into debt. The floors required heavy-duty reconstruction and leveling before we could actually lay the new flooring. Ah, the joys of old farm houses!

The island was bought in Ebay, as were the lights and cabinet hardware.

A few weeks ago I finally summoned the nerve to stencil the backs of these director's chairs, found in the
Home Decorators catalog for peanuts. 08/99 is the month and year we were married.

One of my favorite features is the "tin" backsplash. We found it at Lowe's and it adds such a custom, vintage touch. Most people believe that it is actual tin, but in reality, it's plastic. Shh!!

Our splurge for the room was the desk/hutch from Pottery Barn. I wanted a free-standing piece that was unique to the cabinetry to add a more custom, built-over-time look. The cabinets were set and Cory measured and measured again. The PB delivery guys were beyond nervous when they arrived to see the tight space reserved for this monster. It slid right in, without an inch to spare.

The fun part of pulling a room together, in my opinion, is finding the little accessories. It tends to be an inexpensive part of the project, but has impact. Great bang for the buck.

My true blue Sarah inspired my collection of little barn scenes.

Here's one final shot, in low light.
I'm telling you what, having a functional kitchen makes a world of difference. Who cares that our main bath is still a major eyesore? Not me.
We had ours done a year and a half ago. Out went cabinet doors for more useful drawers. In came a door with a trash can behind it so there would be no unsightly trash can in view. I thought of my needs, and that is what we ended up with. A kitchen that would serve us as individuals. Great job!

I love what you have done with your kitchen - it is wonderful.
ReplyDeleteYour dresser (you call it a hutch - we call it a dresser!) is perfect.
Love the tin/plastic splashback (backsplash!!!)
Especially love that skinny stool by the door.
Thanks for sharing. I really need to add a bit more character to our holiday cottage kitchen - especially as we have now finally completed our main home's kitchen (yes - we too chose cream).
Enjoy your space, and thanks for sharing.
lllllllllooooove it!! I love ths island and the pottery barn piece! :)
ReplyDeleteNow how was it you knew we were tearing out our old farmhouse (111 years!) kitchen this weekend! HOLY COW, do I love what you did. Our re-do is a long time comin', believe me. We've done the pay as you go too, don't want to owe, so we're doing it ourselves, already bought the cabinets (ten years ago already!) and the dishwasher (like you, I've been without one for 18 years in this old house!) and now the day is finally coming when we make ourselves miserable and tear out the heart of our home to give it a transplant! I hope mine turns out half as wonderful as yours...yours looks very large and I'd love to get an island like yours, it's what I've always dreamed of, and your hutch is PERFECT!
ReplyDeleteXOXO

It is gorgeous!!!!!! And it seems just perfect for a farmhouse kitchen, like that kitchen was meant for your home and vice-versa! I have always admired those tin-look backsplash pieces...are they the self-adhesive kind. We are hoping to paint our cabinets and replace the countertop soon and I have considered that look for the backsplash.
ReplyDeleteIt all looks so wonderful! You both did an amazing job!!!
YOU WIN AN AWARD FOR THIS!!!!!!!!! SOME KIND OF BIG FAT SHINY AWARD FOR THIS!!! I LOVE IT!! the chairs, tin, island, please come to my house :)
ReplyDeleteYour kitchen in breathtaking! I absolutely adore it! We are in the middle of our small kitchen remodel and are taking our time as well. We also "pay as we go" and do a lot of the work ourselves so work has to be squeezed in over weekends, etc when
ReplyDeleteDaddy and his Dad (our "Grumpy") have time. It is all soooo worth it though.
Thanks for sharing it.
Wow! What a wonderful transformation! I love the open shelving, the light fixtures, the shiny floors...it all looks fabulous. Lovely lovely!!
ReplyDeleteAmy
Thank you for sharing, your kitchen is so beautiful! We are in the process of picking things out for our home so it's nice to hear other people's stories and see that rooms do actually get finished...all in due time :)
ReplyDeleteIt looks beautiful!! I loved that you guys took advantage of the good deals, used tiles that looked like real tin {& no one will ever notice} didn't go in to debt over it, and splurged for that piece from Pottery Barn.
ReplyDeleteThose are the kinds of things that make it all the more lovely & unique.
LOVE it!
Great Job! Love it!
ReplyDeleteLOVE all of it! And, I've been loving your blog.
ReplyDeleteI am in complete and utter (farm humor) AWE! Speechless actually. I bow to your greatness. Way to go!!
ReplyDeleteI will be in touch on the "adoption questions" later! I have so many!!!
XOXO-beachbrights
Oh it is absolutely beautiful!!!!! I love everything about it. Especially those floors. I don't have a dishwasher right now. :| Although I've been spoiled all those years I do kinda enjoy the quiet time I get when I'm washing. I do a lot of praying over that sink. ;)
ReplyDeleteSo cool to see this post after getting home from your place last night. I love seeing the before pictures-it's just unbelievable the transformation you've done. I've been in a bit of a project slump this summer and coming to see your beautiful house in person has totally bumped me out of it. I'm headed to a promising estate sale this morning. Wanna go with?
ReplyDeleteHugs, Jen
Wow! I LOVE it! I love how you added the pb piece! The light over the island is cool as well as the backsplash! What a great idea to stencil your anniversary on your chairs! I suppose if your husband forgets now... he's a dead man! ;)
ReplyDeleteShan, someday when I have a bunch of money can you come over and re-do my house for me? Thanks. I'll babysit your kids in return for the favor. I'd love the chance to get to know them. I'll let you kow when the big bunch of money is here. :)
ReplyDeleteOh how charming! It couldn't be more perfect. And, 75% off on the cabinets? What a steal. I love the layout, colors and the lovely secretary. Your kitchen couldn't be more perfect.
ReplyDeleteBlessings,
Spencer
Oh, wow. I'm blown away by this. I can't believe that can possibly be in the same house! Bravo. You did a beautiful job. I love it.
ReplyDeleteThat is really beautiful. You did such a nice job with every choice. And congrats too on being able to pay as you go. We just finished remodeling a 100 year old house and I'll soon have pics of my own kitchen. But I had to go into debt or it would never have gotten done. Oh well.
ReplyDeleteYour new kitchen looks great - I love cream colored cabinets in kitchens, it makes the room look so light and airy.
ReplyDeleteJust found your blog - your kitchen is making me drool. I love the little stool, I love that I was married 08/99 also, I love the colors! Well done.
ReplyDeleteoh wow! i love what you did to your kitchen! i love the 'chandelier'!
ReplyDeleteLOVE it!! We saw a door free curbside just like that wooden one of yours. I am still trying to convince my Cory to go get it for me.
ReplyDeleteElise
Oh my, that is my dream kitchen. Please, please, please come do mine next!
ReplyDeleteOh my! I love it, love it, love it!! We have the same backsplash:) How funny is that?
ReplyDeleteYour kitchen looks awesome. Loooove the isle. We'll be installing our new kitchen at the end of summer. A name for your lovely farmhouse? Hmmmmm (I'm at a loss), I'm sure it'll come to you.
ReplyDeleteOh my goodness! What a beautiful transformation!
ReplyDeleteWOW - Huge transformation!!!
ReplyDeleteOh my word. Your kitchen is a beautiful transformation! Such dedication to pay as you go and keep from going into debt. Dave Ramsey would be so proud, as am I! That is always the challenge of home remodeling projects.
ReplyDeleteYour hard work and perseverance really paid off and you have an absolutely stunning kitchen to show for it.
Bravo!!
I always love that among all your multitude of comments, that I am one of the few who has had the honor of visiting your home! It sort of makes me feel special and sorta cool by association.
ReplyDeleteI adore your kitchen! Great job!
ReplyDeletemelissa
Great job! We have been in re-do mode for 6 months. Really the only thing left is window treatments and accessories. I find this to be so diffucult!
ReplyDeleteI adore your kitchen!
Hi. I followed your link from Jen Kershner's website, and I love your kitchen! It's just my style. And how about Flower Patch Farm for a name for your Farmhouse? Love your blog!
ReplyDeleteYour piece from Pottery Barn is so perfect. What a great addition to an already fabulous remodel.
ReplyDeleteWe did a much smaller reno years ago and boy did I miss my kitchen sink. Doing dishes in a bathroom is just not appetizing.
It looks amazing!!! I'm jealous! I love how light and bright and airy it is. Great job, and thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteVery nice ! We just finished our kitchen floor - we have been on that 2 1/2 year remodeling trip - it does take forever when you tear down to studs , do it yourself and do it on a debt free budget ! I will post pics sometime soon ( I am waiting for a good buy on a perfect fridge to match, first LOL) I love your blue on the walls and your island - so crisp and peaceful !
ReplyDeleteHugs ~ Kammy
p.s. doesn't a remodeled kitchen make cooking so much fun and such an easy clean up ?
I love doing house makeovers. You did a fabulous job. Come for a visit. I have a Give Away going on all month

I love how your kitchen turned out. Fabulous!!! I love the color. I love the lights. I love the backsplash (I'm totally going to do this at my house, someday).
ReplyDeleteJust popping over from the Mother Load. I love your re-do. I have to admit, most remodel type posts make me jealous, but you are so kind and down to earth in this post I just find you inspiring and I'm happy for you! I hope to have a very basic Ikea kitchen someday . . .
ReplyDeleteYou did a fabulous job--it's truly a gorgeous space! I love the touch of the Pottery Barn hutch, and I also love that you weren't afraid to mix and match finishes.
ReplyDeleteYou'll probably appreciate the cream cabinets more than you know! I installed white cabinets in my house and they get dirty within days of wiping them down. Every little speck shows.
Gorgeous! I love it! I am in the thought process still as far as a redo! Nice work.
ReplyDeleteYour kitchen does look great! I really appreciate integrating the differnt woods, painted etc! What a lovely job you did!
ReplyDeleteIt's beautiful!! your before looks a lot like my before kitchen - only cleaner :)
ReplyDeleteCongrats. I know how good it feels to work in a kitchen that was a labor of love and beautiful to boot!
Beautiful kitchen makeover- It looks so amazing!!! :)
ReplyDeleteLove your kitchen makeover, especially the wall color, hutch/desk and back-splashes. I have the same ones, but they're metal. I LOVE them, they're so much easier to clean than ceramic tile like I used to have. Mine are showing little spots of rust from condensation, which I don't mind, but if anyone out there is considering real metal and rust spots would bother you, consider going with plastic or pay 3X as much for stainless steel. I took scraps from my steel and had a memo/chalk board made. I plan to paint my pressed metal back splashes white at some point, and let the rust peek through. The aqua paint is beautiful with your cream cabinets! I also love your bracket shelves and your collection of milk glass. My daughter used various milk glass vases for her wedding centerpieces, (featured on the oldcentennialfarmhouse blog) and now I'm looking forward to displaying them as you have. Great job, beautiful kitchen!
ReplyDeleteI'm so glad I found your blog - I'm really enjoying looking through it and love your style!
ReplyDeleteOH WOW!!! I am soooo impressed... Love it!! I could look at the after pics all day! Way to go!!
ReplyDelete~Whitney
ok, this is not the same kitchen! Did you just move and posted the kitchen from the new house? ;) Great job and I love how open and light it feels! Love your kitchen!
ReplyDeleteMy mouth is hanging open! IT LOOKS INCREDIBLE! I know the reno-part is a pain in the tushy, but the end result is usually worth it! Wow, wow and wow. Love it.
ReplyDeleteIt looks sooo lovely! And so light and bright!!! I am so glad we got to see this! Thanks for joining in on the party! Jen
ReplyDeleteYou've got a BEAUTIFUL kitchen. I absolutely love the lights!
ReplyDelete-FringeGirl
Oh my goodness, your kitchen is stunning!
ReplyDeleteI love the way this turned out! We just purchased an old home and are in the middle of kitchen reno! Our kitchens are very similar. We will be doing black cabinets, creamy counters and tin (or faux) backsplash! We just decided this weekend to do a butcher block for the island...where did you find yours?

ReplyDeleteBeyound BEAUTIFUL! You have the exact layout that I would like. I do have a nice kitchen, but for the next one...
ReplyDeleteHi Shannon,
ReplyDeleteI copied you. Yep. Love the backsplash. So I linked up the inspiration to my blog.
I know you are leaving this beautiful kitchen. It is a blessing to be able to follow your journey and I am anxious to see where God is leading you and your family; Inspired even more to listen, let go and follow. Much joy to you!
Oh shoot. Sorry about the mis-spelling Shannan. A little sensitive myself to getting it right.

WOW I LOVE IT CHECK OUT MY BLOG TOO WWW.THECOTTAGEFARMHOUSE.COM
ReplyDeleteDid you do the remodel on the floors or did you have to hire it done? I'm having floor issues in my old farmhouse & just wonder about how difficult the repair would be. Love the "tin" backsplash! That's my next project -- any advise is greatly appreciated.
ReplyDeleteHi there! We had to hire the floors done because they were so uneven that all floor options were a no-go. The contractor had to cut a huge section of floor out (where the big "hump" was) and rebuild it. It was expensive, so we waited until a year after the rest of the kitchen was done before we took the plunge. It took us a while to save up the cash.
DeleteThe "tin" backsplash is from Lowes. Couldn't be easier to work with! My dad put ours up. It sticks right onto the walls.
What's up, everything is going perfectly here and ofcourse every one is sharing data, that's in fact excellent, keep
