Something is awry.
And it's not even whites.
It's the "fun colors". You know exactly what I mean, right? It's the polka-dotted little girl leggings and the 2T feet-pajams covered in blue and orange dogs. It's snowflake knee socks and panda bear boxers. It's a basketful of smell-good nostalgia. I love that load!
But this week sucker-punched me with a surprise, 1-day-only head cold and a husband who's been MIA. And then there was last night's project...but I'm just not ready to talk about that yet. I completely spaced a deadline and I'm up to my pits in church goings-on. I just don't know what else to say: I've gone all willy-nilly, as a result.
I've lost my will to enforce order.
The natives are a quarter past restless.
Yesterday I found myself hankering for a doughnut. Normally, I would appease myself with PB&J or something similarly carby and sweet and free, but being a Mama means knowing thyself.
Amen.
You gotta know when to scold 'em, know when to fold 'em, know when to walk away from the doughnut and know when to RUN.
So we loaded up the van and we hightailed it. We raced the shy sun and we drove until we saw the sign.
There was a sketchy posse of about 12 Seniors holding down the fort, only these Seniors weren't daydreaming about Prom. They were more of the loud-talking, coffee-drinking, baby-staring, clackitty-teeth variety.
It wasn't exactly The Ritz...
But we were in the Impromptu Vacation frame of mind.
So, We.
Rocked.
It.
After our snack, Siley made eyes at a much older woman and she randomly opted to tell me how much her children loved to drink water when they were young'uns.
As if on cue, Silas spilled his cup of water.
Then, she told me how having 3 kids in 4 years "tore her insides up" and it felt very rude to walk away in the middle of that conversation, but I had no choice, because Ruby screamed, "Thilath ith leaving!"
We made it safely back to the van and drove around town for a while, even though it was already 4:30 and dinner was supposedly just around the corner.
Right around here, Ruby conked out.
Silas started slow-blinking near the cows.
We pulled in the lane just in time for me to scrape something together for dinner before rushing off to Mother's Night at Ruby's pre-school.
Honoring our loosey-goosey attitude, I let them watch Wild Kratts during dinner.
What's become of us??

One last thing: I have loved, Loved! hearing about your style sense. I cannot possibly communicate to you how happy youn's make me. You're a funny bunch. I love hearing from you.

Love this! And doncha love the sugar infused sleepy coma with kids? Thanks for your card, made my day! Rock the donuts girlfriend!!! Have you ever had a Krispy Kreme "hot now"? It's absoluely a must on the bucket list.xoxo
ReplyDeleteNow I want a donut.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Polly; Krispy Kreme right off the conveyor belt are dreamy...
ReplyDeleteLove it when kids who really need a rest finally succumb to the peaceful motion of the car. Sometimes it won't happen any other way.
Hope all is getting back to normal for you.
I've never heard you say youn's in real life (not that this isn't real life, but you know what I mean) but it makes me laugh :) And a good rendezvous to Dunkin' Donuts is good for anyone's soul. Glad you had a fun mini-vacay "Dawn" ;)
ReplyDeleteSuch a cute post. You are such a good Mom. They will remember these off the wall fun times. You may want to rerinse those clothes, hah. I know this because I do that often and my kiddos are grown up.
ReplyDeleteHI-larious!
ReplyDeleteYour posts make me LOL most days. Good god, you are funny! I hope it's not lame that I quote YOU in my fave parts of your post, but here it is again today:
"There was a sketchy posse of about 12 Seniors holding down the fort"
Yes. That was where I first laughed out loud <----I get tired of not spelling it out sometimes. Call me old fashioned. :-)
I also thoroughly enjoyed the weird bits of convo you had with a few of the seniors..the random water comment and the ripping up of the insides..I'm laughing again.
Your photos made me nostalgic for the Krispy Kreme near my old townhome. I still miss it! When I met my hubby, I told him a HUGE part of why I bought said townhome was because of how close it was to Krispy~ 3 blocks WITH a drive thru! Genius.
Thanks for making me laugh out loud. No doughnuts (or donuts) near and I'm too lazy to trek out on this MN day, but I will have a hot chocolate in honor of you and your adorable kids!
Cheers!!
I laughed all the way through. From dryer to donut. I totally agree that your kids will love you for your spunk and fun times.
ReplyDeleteOh Shannan you always have a way of making the ordinary seem extrodinary! I just loved this one! Your kids are sooo darn adorable! Traci
ReplyDeleteSounds like a PERFECT break! Wishing there was a donut shop within 100 miles of here...
ReplyDeleteLoved the part about the woman and the water - and Silas and the water! FUNNY! What a yummy day!
ReplyDeleteLOVE YOU!
HBY
I may be the only one that comments about Wild Kratts. My girls absolutely adore them. I actually think Joey (my youngest) has a severe crush on them. She talks about them all the time.... it took me FOREVER to figure out who in the world she was talking about!
ReplyDeleteBTW, you make my day when I see a new post pop up on my "dashboard." That's creeper-ish. But you get the picture.
I love the fun load! I don't even mind hanging and folding that load - Love, love your style and obviously "Thilath" nearly escaping :)
ReplyDeleteToo funny!
ReplyDeleteI never knew there was a such thing as a "fun load." Must be because I only have a boy so I'm missing the cute pink polka dot leggings and what not. :)
Oh good belly laughs!! Thank you for this!!! Sounds like quite a day, a wonderful kind of day!
ReplyDeleteDo you have a book?? If you do I want to read it..you are such a hoot! Love your stories and your precious kiddos!
ReplyDeleteWe have a Dunkins smack dab in the middle of our teeny tiny town and I can't tell you how many times I would be about to freak out and instead would change the whole feel of the afternoon just by getting out and getting a couple of munchkins for the munchkins. And totally unrelated, how did you manage to luck out with three kids who show so much personality to the camera????? That's what I want to know. HOW??? They are all so cute.
ReplyDeleteDude! We so would've met you for donuts! (if it weren't for the pesky distance thing) I wanted a donut yesterday and was going to take my littlest two to get one in between dropping Daddy at the airport & picking up one of the big kids from kindergarten but then one of those little two chose to get carsick. So we went home. Donutless. And hour later when I asked him if he wanted lunch he said "Yes. Donuts please". So we still haven't quenched that hankering but we will before returning to the airport to get Daddy. I promise you that!
ReplyDeleteAnd Wild Kratts during dinner?!? Scandalous! :) (my kids LOVE that show!)
Please tell me, Flower Patch Farmgirl, where do I find a pink icing'd donut at 9:15 at night in Podunk Montucky? Because now I need one. With pink icing. Can you believe we don't even have a real donut shop here? Or a Dented Can? You'll really be slumming when you come to visit.
ReplyDeleteI'm a new reader and I just LOVED this post! It made me absolutely crack up. Your pictures were great, too! Thanks for the post!
ReplyDeleteRebecca
i love your donut break and all the geezers that was in thar was so happy to see u. u just make my day and your three engines........they r just the best. smile, u know your the best blogger around.
ReplyDeleteHa! I was laughin' when you said seniors thinking I might just randomly see my grandpa in your post (the way I randomly saw the CR 15 church!!!) No luck, don't think there is one of those DD in the big city!!!!! And did someone mention the Dented Can??!!?? Fun to hear about things from "home". Good for you for being fun!
ReplyDeleteOnly you my friend who lives on a farm, would have someone recounting about their insides be'n tore up. I have laughed so hard now I'm hungry for sprinkles on a donut or cupcake. It's midnight and I'm reading your blog. Your writing is becoming a problem for me!
ReplyDelete~G~
Now, that's a field trip worth documenting! We score major points with the small folk when we break our own rules. Yay for donut va-cays!
ReplyDeleteoh gosh. i really want a doughnut.
ReplyDeleteclackitty-teeth...hee hee...randomly opted to tell you how much her kids liked drinking water...ha ha ha...thilath ith leaving!...collapsing in giggles. I just love your stories, really, I do. Oh and I didn't comment on the last post (I couldn't decide my style outside of yoga pants, long sleeve tees or tanks under Tinkerbell t-shirts) but I now have greater insight into the french blue oxford stripes in your blog background.
ReplyDeleteI love this post!! I also love days like that lol. They often happen when my hubby is working late. Bedtime is usually a little later, but we get there in the end :-) . Now I want donuts and it isn't even 9am! I also have a poorly girl so we won't be going on any adventures today , I could probably pull off tv through dinner though! x
ReplyDeleteSometimes the soul needs an impromptu doughnut run! My fav impromptu thing to do with my girls? (You asked, right??) Grab a DQ treat, drive to the state park near us and sit on the beach watching the sunset whilst bundled up. Glorious! I love knowing that these small things make for BIG memories for the kiddos.
ReplyDeleteI remember trips like those...good for you!!
ReplyDeleteAdorable. Love it. I see the princess made a pink choice. Good call.
ReplyDelete1.) I'd like to have a doughnut now.
ReplyDelete2.) This is one stinkin funny post.{i really laughed out loud with the little man}
3.) Lordy mercy, sometimes we just need these days don't we?
Somedays, it jus' takes a donut doesn't it? Being a donut snob though, only Kripsy Kremes for me. I don't care if they can't spell crispy or creme right, they are doing some wonderful work over there. :D
ReplyDeleteWhat IS it about Wild Kratts, anyways? It's as if the world stops spinning when that show is on! My kids know to manipulate and craft their afternoon tv time to accomodate for those two boys. I tell ya...the days of our youth. There is nothin like it. Donuts at dinnertime. Sugar fingers on the seatbelts. Lazy driving days. I love em. A cup of joe is callin my name this morning at the big DD. It was a fleeting thought until I read this post. Now, I'm all up in Dunkin's face.
ReplyDeletethis post made my morning! your humor is just...so...on point, never contrived, so applicable to all of us mommies out here. i love it! and i love your style. i know i don't knnnooowww you, but your style is so...YOU.
ReplyDeleteI L=O=V=E the donut bag..."America Runs on DD with the figure of a person SPRINTING. Ummm. No. I'm pretty sure you couldn't move like that after a visit to DD. The spirit would be willing, but the body would most definitely protest. Too funny!
ReplyDeleteuh that sounds like bliss to me....boring?? puh-lease:)
ReplyDeleteToo funny, we take simiar vacations. Actually, we call them "adventures". We tried Sonic for the first time this week....now that was a special adventure. Thanks for the morning chuckle. Now I need to locate a donut(or dozen).
ReplyDeleteOK....I treasure this....
ReplyDelete"Then, she told me how having 3 kids in 4 years "tore her insides up" and it felt very rude to walk away in the middle of that conversation, but I had no choice, because Ruby screamed, "Thilath ith leaving!"
Reading this over and over again just makes me laugh soooo hard!! Very funny...the whole thing. I read this at 6am this morning and it put a smile on my face instantly. Thanks friend. ;)
Have a great weekend.
Beth
Somehow your pictures make dreary Indiana so much more interesting than I see it. :) Love your posts and they encourage me so much. Thank you!
ReplyDeleteYou are a girl after my own heart. Loadin' up the youngins' for a donut makes perfect sense to me! Ruby's lisp just knocks me out.
ReplyDeleteHa ha, we had this same vacation on Monday. Well, it was quite different but same in the Mommy really needed it sense. I'm working on my photo post of it now, can;t wait to show it to you.
ReplyDeleteMy husband is gone ALOT so get through the tough spots with mini vacations as often as we can. You gotta do, what you gotta do. Sorry you missed your deadline :( hate when that happens
Love it! I lost the battle of the wills yesterday to a carrot cake with cream cheese filling whoopie pie from Ralphs bakery counter. And to be honest, I didnt put up much of a fight. I'm glad someone else is embracing the need for sugar and carbs! Happy Thursday to and the kiddos:)
ReplyDeleteAh, the donut run, I know it well. Ruby and I share the love of the pink frosted, it's been my fav since I was her age probably. You are the best mom ever.
ReplyDelete"The natives are a quarter past restless." Can I steal this line?
ReplyDeleteAnd I loved the Kenny Rogers reference!
ReplyDeleteYour conversation about the baby torn innerds of the old dunkin woman made me laugh. Your 60 minute vacay sounds perfect! The donuts looked mighty good too. I think the problem is March...it's an odd month. That's my theory and I'm blaming my problems on it!
ReplyDelete-FringeGirl
Wha?! Your day was an A+ with bonus points mommy day! I love your "I've lost my will to enforce order."!! THAT was my day yesterday. My kids saw that Momma was weak and they overthrew the government.
ReplyDeleteGlad you got a mini vacay....I need to try that sometime. My kids would be shocked back to obedience. :-)
Love,
jamie b
Sometimes the best memories are made from throwing caution to the wind and choosing chaos over order. Somehow, that's where order gets redeemed.
ReplyDeleteOh Krispy Kreme is on the WAY to violin lesson, just down the street. I do that like once a month because fun needs to be had and mama needs a break! You sound like me when hubby deploys. You will get your groove back, it just takes time or hubby coming home. I am the queen of catching up on laundry because I always let it sit & sit & rewash it because it sat.
ReplyDeleteI loved reading this! Reminds me of when I am in the middle of a scrapbook (or some other craft) project and I don't want to clean up my "craft desk" AKA the kitchen table. So guess what??? It's carpet picnic night at our house. We lay a blanket down and eat our dinner in the family room and let the kids watch TV during dinner. The little kids think it such a treat but my older kids are on to the fact that mom is just being lazy =)
ReplyDeleteHave I mentioned that we now have a donut shop in the Village? Well, it's not really a donut shop, it's a french bakery that sells donuts. I hope you will keep that in mind next time you have a craving.
ReplyDeleteLOVE your comment about knowing when to scold 'em and knowing when to hold 'em.
ReplyDeleteIt would take us that long to find a donut shop if you don't count the ones at the IGA or Casey's, so I feel your pain, sense your dilemma, and applaud your courage for adventure!
A Momma has to do what a Momma has to do!
I have not been in "blog world" for awhile, but just checked in and seeing how much your kids have grown in the past months I havent been able to follow is amazing! And Im sorry to say my kids see dunkin every day, which is not a good thing lol!!!
ReplyDeleteshannan you're the coolest. do-nuts!? My kids don't get such a thing! :) you's supah mom.
ReplyDelete:)
Everybody needs a little donut every once in a while...So cute! And now I'm starving for a chocolate glazed...
ReplyDeleteperfect! this is the best part of being a mama....sweet escapes and quick adventures.
ReplyDeletenow come over and fold my whites with me!
xoxo
This sounds like how I feel every day. What is happening? What is going on? So much chaos. So much fun!
ReplyDeleteI do, however, envy you the donuts.
Lately I've been feeling like maybe it's too much...maybe I've committed myself to toooooo much. I guess that's a normal feeling. Oh well. We'll see how it feels when number three comes along.
oh I laughed out loud like 3 times during that post! Glad you all enjoyed your doughnut vacation! I'm sure the clackity teeth seniors enjoyed all the young 'uns
ReplyDeleteyou. crack. me. up!! i love how both of silas's feet are off the ground in that picture! at least it seems so. and I am ashamed to have missed the fun with your style but all i must say is you rock it girl!!
ReplyDeleteyou're living it well!
I have to update my earlier comment. This morning, as I was groping around under the back seat of my car, looking for the diaper wipes to wipe my hands after pumping gas, I found a plastic container of glazed old fashioned donut holes! I totally forgot I bought them at the supermarket....two weeks ago! Anywhoo, I snarfed down eight of those stale puppies in under a minute. Whew! What a relief - see what effect you have on your audience, Farmgirl?
ReplyDeleteSilas' blue jacket, collar up..preppy and adorable. Donut drive through...why can't there be one in my town!...Lady telling you about her innards...Priceless.
ReplyDeleteWhat fun! This day was a treasure.
ReplyDeleteMy kids are much older than yours. Our 'junk food days', the special just because eating in front of the t.v. days and the spilling (which thankfully happens less) are good memories.
Life is always changing. Remember, "These are the good old days."
Finally got our get away posted -
ReplyDeletehttp://kidsstuffworld.com/2011/03/if-you-want-to-call-me-baby/
Hoe great would it be to get our little broods together for one of these outings :)
