Here's the thing: my tendency leans toward not showing something until it's *just* right. So yes, I have dawdled. I keep thinking about the things I still want to do, the details, the yada yadas. Part of me loves the idea of a magical Big Reveal. Give me some wow factor, people! Give me a megaphone to scream into! Give me a living room that is staged to within an inch of its life!
It's a nice dream.
But I'm finding that "that" part of me is fading a bit. I have bigger things on my mind. I'm not a perfect person with a perfect house. My living room often includes dirty socks strewn about, piles of laundry on the floor, library books covering all flat surfaces and the odd Lego or a hundred. You might as well just know it.
So, here she is.
Full disclosure on the curtains: The first night we hung them, I was sure I had made an egregious error in judgment. It was dark and they were pulled closed, in all their zany glory. Complicating matters was the fact that my pregnant friend had just hemmed and backed 5 of the 6 panels. I'll be honest, I'm a tiny bit afraid of her right now. Sister's tough as nails, and that's without the pregnancy hormones. So I couldn't really imagine a situation where I'd tell her I had scrapped the whole idea.
The next morning, Calvin came downstairs and yelled, "Cool! It looks like a Mexican restaurant in here!"
I could see his point.
And as much as I want to marry Mexican food....
But then the sun started to filter through them and I fell in love.
And then, my sign arrived.
Have you visited Between You and Me's etsy shop? Do yourself a favor and go. Pronto.
I adore Tara (she blogs here). She's my fashion muse and shares my passion for adoption and good food. I already knew that everything Tara touches turns to gold, or maybe something fabulously chippy and layered and rustic and truth-soaked, but even I was not prepared for how much I would love my sign.
I stare at it many times a day. Last night, I took a break from the book I was reading and reached up to touch it. Not even playing.
It's the perfect size to fill that large space behind the couch and I love that it's a one-of-a-kind. The quality of craftsmanship is impeccable. I cannot say enough about it.
Between You and Me is offering FPFG readers $15 off any purchase through the month of September. Just be sure to mention the code FLOWERPATCH when you place your order. All signs are hand-crafted and fully customizable. (Example: I gave her a verse and a particular translation for my sign and they rocked it.) They also offer a range of sizes.
So, there you have it! The first peek. And now, I shall retire to said room with a slice of pie. (Love you, pie. Love you so much.)

Looks wonderful! The colors, textures, openness, coziness, & high quality items for a fraction of their retail price are FABULOUS!!! I can so identify with wanting everything to be just so. With littles, they are teaching me major lessons in acceptance!
ReplyDeleteLOVE your living room!! I adore that school clock, especially. It's all just perfectly eclectic. Awesome!!
ReplyDeletewhat if i'm jealous?? what if i want it? what if i love it?
ReplyDeleteYour home is perfectly you, and I never in a million years would have thought that it was a mexican restaurant...even though I love mexican food like the next girl. I'd marry it tonight, if I could.
ReplyDeleteThe sign is perfect in your home... I love that it represents your family and the truth you guys stand on.
We feel so honored that it hangs in your home!!
I LOVE your Mexican restaurant room, the colors are so beautiful and happy!! What a perfect backdrop to your family's life there!
ReplyDeleteWow! The curtains are FABULOUS!!
ReplyDeleteYour {freaking amazing} living room makes me want to break up with my whole house. Maybe pie will help. Thanks for the inspiration (both culinary and decorative).
ReplyDeleteThat sign makes the room! I can't think of a better family motto.
ReplyDeleteHeads up on the curtains/bed tapestry: I have this exact tapestry. I operate on the firm belief that life should be washable (at least, mine should), and I threw that sucker into the wash like any other 100% cotton something. I may or may not have tumble-dried. All things the label told me specifically not to do, but cotton is easy, right? Don't be like me. Be gentle, and hang to dry. Mine is a lighter, slightly distressed version of its former self. Kinda looks like a faded bed sheet, which, come to think of it, fits my life just fine.
Girl. I washed AND dried, too! Maybe I did a low heat dry? Or maybe your dryer is a beast and could totally take mine in a fist fight?
DeleteLOVE! LOVE! LOVE! First pic looks straight out of a magazine........yet one that you could really "live in"! ADORE the Verse painting! Looking forward to your future rooms.......
ReplyDeleteYour living room is gorgeous! We have orange and blue in ours too! Loving the color combo. The drapes and that chair and that light fixture totally make the space.
ReplyDeleteShannan my friend...your living room is absolutely show stopping gorgeous! I'm truly serious...it looks just like something out of a magazine! LOVE it...and loved Calvin's observance about the curtains. :-) Kids seem to have a way of putting everything right out there, eh? But when the whole picture is seen it is absolutely gorgeous! Hugs from me to you...my housewarming gift to you! :-) Wish I could give them to you in person.
ReplyDeleteWell played Missy Thing!!! Love it all, so glad you have moved on from the Betty Draper rental. The curtains are a stroke of genius.
ReplyDeleteOh my word. I love the room. And that sign. It's stunning!
ReplyDeleteI love every single bit of it!! The curtains are divine...don't doubt yourself next time! Love the sign, gonna go check that site now :)
ReplyDeleteXOXO,
Angie
Love the color scheme girl. So fresh and happy. That orange chair just makes me happy! Oh and Tara is the bomb. My sign makes my heart sing.
ReplyDeleteI adore everything about this! Everything. It is seriously perfect.
ReplyDelete~FringeGirl
Love it, love it, love it. It's so cheerful!!! Thanks for sharing -- you know I was dying to see. xo ~SalGal

ReplyDeleteHey, Arden Christian! You must have accidentally deleted your comment. Here it is!
Delete"Someone needs to shoot straight here. My mother loves your blog but as a current buyer for a major(very trendy)retailer/housewares catalog, this room is seriously no bueno. If you really want feedback, the bones of the room are good - the floor, wall, lights, but the chair/stool is a nightmare. The curtains are cool, the couch is frumpy, and color to balance ratio is off.
I don't know if you just want everyone to "love" your style but you must know they're fudging because they like your other attributes. You are cute and your kids are super cute but whoa. I know you live in the Midwest and I live in NYC but I was raised in PNW so I know good style. When my mom asked me look at this room, I was startled by your choices.
Rethink this mess. Now."
Another opinion: yay for flowers, both fresh and on the curtains. I have rooms in my house that feel "off" design wise, and would love to know how to fix them, but I'd much rather have the joy you've presented to us in these photos!
Deleteit's soooooo happy! also, it's impossible to look at that lovely space and not have a giant grin on your face. it's just delightful. you're so lucky to live in it.
ReplyDeleteI would love a sign like that. Must visit that shop when I get serious about that darn ugly green living room I have. I love this whole room. It makes me happy and makes me think you should come spread your cheer in MY living room.
ReplyDeleteYour room is so gorgeous and happy! Love everything about it, and I think it's perfect just the way it is!!
ReplyDeleteFinally! I've been waiting and waiting (but totally understand about not wanting to reveal until it's all done!)
ReplyDeleteThis room is so beautiful and so happy. The orange chair and curtains would make me smile every time I looked at them. Not to mention the AWESOME verse on the wall!
Can't wait to see the rest! :)
I love the curtains. LOVE! Love. LOVE!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteI also love Tara. She is the super-est.
My favorite thing about your house so far is the gorgeous light.
Wow, so pretty.
Light wins me over every time.
That tall cabinet is still one of my favorite pieces of furniture Ive seen. LOVE it!
ReplyDeleteYour home looks cozy, warm & inviting. And the scripture art is the icing on the cake for sure:)
Trust me, lady, it will not look like a Mexican restaurant in there until you tie the curtains together in the middle. That Calvin cracks me UP! Love your sign so much, and your furniture collection/selection is wonderful. Well done!
ReplyDeleteThis made me LAUGH!
Deletej'adore.
ReplyDeleteoh la la!
c'est magnifique!
wait, shouldn't i be writing this in spanish instead?!?
es magnÃfico
:)
OK, before I make my own comment I just read that "deleted" comment. What the heck?
ReplyDeleteI love your room. I want to come sit on your couch. Your colors and choices make me happy. Sir Wonky Head's comment does not. Amen.
xxoo
We cracked up when it came through last night! Sheesh. He needs a massage or something.
DeleteExactly.
DeleteCute. Vintage. Industrial. Whimsical. A few of my favorite things, although I am lacking in the whimsical department. I can't get over my symmetry compulsion.
ReplyDeleteLove the scripture verse. We have Zeph. 3:17 on our wall, and yes, it is symmetrical.
I love the curtains! They look like a modern take on vintage barkcloth --- and I mean that in a fresh, modern way.
ReplyDeleteThe verse art is lovely too ... perfect.
Gorgeous! I love everything about it! xoxo
ReplyDeletei am a little obsessed with the orange chair. love it. the whole room looks great but most of all i am impressed by your thriftiness.
ReplyDeleteADORABLE! Love it :) Well done on the thrifty goodness :)
ReplyDeleteOh my gracious, I LOVE it. Also, I am totally totally impressed with the small amount of money you spent on the entire thing :-)
ReplyDeletethe thing about messes is that you look upon them, all crazy and joyful with colors and laughter and stains all over and suddenly you realize that you don't need to rethink them. You live in them. You wallow in them. You are so thankful and proud and impressed with the mess of a family and children and life that you've made that you find yourself skipping. Don't look back. Unless it's at your curtains. Wink at them and make a clicking sound with your mouth and whistle dixie. Because as it turns out it's not a mess after all. It's your beautiful life.
ReplyDeleteLove your style! Calvin's comment had me laughing out loud! You have a beautiful family and home. You are truly blessed.
ReplyDeleteKindest regards,
Bridget
California
I love your lovely, colorful living room. It makes me feel happy and that verse over the sofa is wonderful. I think the curtains are wonderful and loved Calvin's statement.
ReplyDeleteBless your hearts as you continue on your journey.
Love and hugs ~ FlowerLady Lorraine
FAAABulous! I love how the turqoise button ties the pillow into table/stool.
ReplyDeleteHope you enjoyed a big piece of pie for a job well done.
Mexican restaurant - ha!
ReplyDeleteHave you ever read Shauna Niequist's post, "Things I Don't Do"? Here's a link on her mom's page. http://www.lynnehybels.com/article_things.asp
I love the way she just admits she doesn't have time for everything.
Blessings,

CookingAtCafeD
such a happy place!
ReplyDeletei'm so excited for you and this brand new stage in life...and can't wait to see more!
p.s. calvin is my favorite kind of person.
I want to live in this room because I'm pretty sure I would be all smiles, all day long. So happy!
ReplyDeleteOne question---what is your thought on the jute rug? Been contemplating one. Is it soft enough...do the kiddos like it? With two little ones that sit on our floor and play, I'm wondering about the "comfort" level. Thanks!!!!
It would not be my first choice, but we are making do with what we already have. BUT...it's not rough at all. It's not super cushiony-soft...it's not great for lounging around on the floor, but it's A-OK to walk on with bare feet.
DeleteThanks for getting back with me so quickly--saw one on craigslist this morning; might be too good of a deal to pass up.
DeleteLOVE everything about the room. STILL wondering which grocery store the shoes came from.....
ReplyDeleteMeijer!! :)
DeleteLove.
ReplyDeleteBeyond love.
Every single thing about it makes me happy, Farmgirl.
You make me happy, too!
p.s. Do you need me to step in on the deleted/no longer deleted comment situation? Cause I totally can. It's my specialty.
p.p.s. Remember that time we all went to the Mexican restaurant? I miss my Midwest peeps.
You are and shall forever remain my very favorite blog bouncer.
Deleteps - This weekend is the Springfield Extrav. You still have time to buy a plane ticket! And you could snap some family photos again. It's time. I'm so for real.
PS - You pinned a red gingham dress from Mod Cloth earlier today and now I shant sleep tonight...
DeleteIt looks great!
ReplyDeleteLove it! The curtains look really nice. And no....it does not look like your favorite restaurant!
ReplyDeleteI love how light and airy it is. A very comfortable room!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful ! Love Calvin's comment about the curtains..... Enjoy your new home !
ReplyDeleteI LOVE to see a room that expresses the personalities of the people that live there. I HATE to see a room that looks like a model home. Yours is for sure the first! Love! I love that tall cabinet between the windows too. Garage sale? Sheesh! What's wrong with people?
ReplyDeleteTHAT. ORANGE. CHAIR. love.
ReplyDeleteThis room makes me smile in a good way. Totally cheerful.
ReplyDeleteGirl. It is BEAUTIFUL. I love the colors, love the curtains, love the sign. I can totally see myself eat chips on salsa {carefully} on the sofa with you in that room. : )
ReplyDeleteThat couch is such an old, ratty mess! No need to eat carefully. Come on over.
DeleteYour room is just beautiful. I laughed at Calvin's comment. It was totally something my grandson would say. Love, love your blog. Keep up the good work.
ReplyDeleteHold up! Let me scoop my jaw up off the floor! This room is AMAZING!!! So bright and cheerful!! I am IN LOVE! I want to steal those curtains and that orange chair and that barn light. GORGEOUSNESS!
ReplyDeleteI like it...a lot. I like it because you picked every single item with love and it fits you. Isn't that what it's all about?
ReplyDeleteP.S. I'm lining curtains for my living room windows. I'm scared they are going to be too dark, but there is no way I'm ripping out the lining after all that work. I'll just pull them wide open every day!
Hi, Shannan, Love your room and I bet the rest looked lovely too. Went past your place yesterday, Rodney, our son who put in your basement took Lowell and I past, its really nice from the outside too. I was surprised how many nice smaller homes are in the area. He warned me that we weren't stoping to visit, I said goodness no--you wouldn't want 8 strangers flooding your place. annschrock@yahoo.com
ReplyDeleteI love your livingroom and I'd like to "live" in it. Also, might you be a dear and help me to decorate my new home which I moved in to about 6 months ago and haven't done a darn thing with?
ReplyDeleteDB
Gorgeous living room. You are now my favorite blog to read!!!!!
ReplyDeleteThat room is amazing!
ReplyDeleteLove the light! I want to slow dance with that tall set of drawers! What an awesome find! Enjoy your new home, thanks for sharing! :)
ReplyDeleteI love your living room! I visited Between You and Me's Etsy site and, funny thing, in looking through the site the seller is on staff at my church! I had no idea!
ReplyDeleteLooks great! We moved the same weekend you did and we still have no rug or any curtains on the walls, so I am impressed with how "together" it all looks!
ReplyDeleteYou are amazing!! I cannot believe how you tied everything together with about $25 bucks! You are indeed my fashion guru.
ReplyDeleteP.S. Congratulations on your new home. I know it will be just wonderful for all of you.
I can attest that it is as cute in real life as it is in pictures. Thank heavens you didn't change the curtains! I see a lot of children and others absorbing the love in that home (after all that is what it is all about).
ReplyDeleteBeautiful! I love your style & think the curtains totally make the room.
ReplyDeleteSo glad you kept the curtains! They sort of make the room... I mean, it is all lovely. Oh and I wish I could find the twin to your chair... but maybe a fraternal one in green?
ReplyDeleteI love it. Like all the vintage touches. The curtains and the orange chair are perfect. Didn't see a vintage camera.....you playing eye spy with us. Where is your sprinkler collection, hah.
ReplyDeleteVery nice. Can't wait to see more.
It's hiding on top of the tall cabinet! Sort of blends in with the painting... haha. I told you, I'm not a good photo stylist. ;)
DeleteI stumbled on your blog recently and stayed up into the wee hours reading about your family leaving the dream house and following where God is calling you. We've just done the same thing - sold our big ol' dream house in June and are currently renting for the time being. Just wanted to say that you are such an inspiration and I love coming here. Your room is so crisp and happy and just radiates love - who needs a perfect color to balance ratio, (whatever that is) anyway? I'm from the South and I know style when I see it - and you've got loads of it.
ReplyDeleteTOO lovely for words! And my very FIRST thought was "Wow! i LOVE those curtains in this room"! I am on a journey to re-vamp out home over the next 12 months to a bright and cheerful place. LOVE your blog and hope to glean much from following you around :0). Enjoy the day...and eat a fajita in honor of your curtains!
ReplyDelete...i love the oranage chair...i love love the curtains...but i adore the sign...may it ever resound in your hearts...and fill your home with love...blessings laney
ReplyDeleteSo the shoes were from Meijer! I LOVE Meijer! I have only visited while in Michigan where Brad is from..and I loved how you could buy food, deodorant, home decor items AND clothing or slippers! Yayy!!
ReplyDeleteYour living room looks sunny, inviting and pretty. Love the curtains, good call. Love it all and no..I'm not "just saying that"..nod to Arden!
Your room certainly gave Arden some serious anger and emotional issues..LOL and wtf?
Love it all!
Oh boy do I love you! And this time it's because you didn't flinch when someone launched a pretty petty comment your way. I'm still grinning at how you handled it. You're a star. Stay gold.
ReplyDeleteAs an interior designer, accredited thrifter (I made that up, you can't get accredited...yet) and all-round "treasure hunter", I give you and your room full props. I very strongly believe two things: first, there are no more "rules" in design. Following rules and "shopping a room" at a "major (very trendy) retailer/housewares catalogue" just gives you a room that looks like it came from...well, a catalogue. Which anyone can do. And second, these are the days when it just makes really good sense to reuse, repurpose, see things differently, treasure pieces with the charm and character that comes with age. It's all about patina, y'all.
You have real talent--you can obviously "see" what colours, styles, finishes, and textures, can be bravely put together to achieve a truly lovely, inviting and totally personal (the most important) end product. Well done, you.
i'm LOVING it!
ReplyDeleteevery last little square inch!
xo
looks so good
ReplyDeleteWell worth the wait! You have captured the essence of what my house would look like if I took the time to actually do it. Love. Love. Love.
ReplyDeletethe verse is the bomb...ties the whole room, er, I mean life together.
ReplyDeleteI absolutely adore this space! Your style is so beautiful and defined. It suits you so well :) I am head over heals in love with the tall skinny cabinet you have! Aw it's just perfection in a piece of furniture. Thanks for sharing the room!
ReplyDeleteWell now this space is just perfect.
ReplyDeleteI like it very much.
LOVE!!!! I think it would be very difficult to walk into that room and not smile :) I've been dying to see some pics of your new home; so thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteLike! If you ever get tired of white walls, I vote for a super light lemony-sherberty ceiling. The curtains are fab.
ReplyDeleteOoooh, yes! Pretty and very farm-girly fresh.
Deletehi just been scrolling back though adoption and read about your son recalling looking out the plane window I just want to say he does remember it and the way the brain works is that everything is laid down with chemicals it's all there (this is why you should be careful what you watch etc) you can not get rid of it (only god can) so everything is in our memory it's just our recall I did not grow up withmy mother but remembered my birth, as an adult I had the privilage of telling my memory to her (very detailed even the clothes people were wearing) and to her amazement it was exactly right -I also remembered exactly how she was feeling I could feel all her emotions -babies feel all their mothers emotions I'mtelling you this because I think it will help you with the children and how you pray -healing the memories and the sence of abandondment- pactice calm heart and joy (with the children) blessing to you on your journey
ReplyDeleteI love your blog and don't comment too often, but HOLY SMOKES!! I absolutely LOVE everything. You did a great job, especially love the curtains!
ReplyDeleteLOVE the colorful, warm and happy room you created! Perfection and that is coming from a neutral loving girl.
ReplyDeletelove, love, love it! the curtains are perfect. :)
ReplyDeleteYour sign jumped out at me! I just had that verse printed on my son's senior picture. I love it!
ReplyDeleteYour room is fabulous!!! Love your curtains, and I so need your chair too! I want to come over and sit in that room in all it's glory! (Don't worry, I make a wonderful jungle gym for kids to climb on in a pinch.)
Love. this. room. Just tried to order a sign and the discount comes up as 10% off, not $15 off??
ReplyDeleteHi there Julie...I'm going to try to find a way to email you so we can figure the glitch out...if for some reason, I can't find your email, and you get this comment, my email is tarahlowry@gmail.com.
DeleteThanks,
Tara (between you & me)
Heavens, what a pretty space. I like it. I can't wait to sit right there someday and eat pie. Yes, pie. I'll bring it. Can't wait!
ReplyDeleteHOMEGIRL. I can SO relate here! We've been in our house since June and I keep wanting to share spaces but we can't swing rugs yet and I keep missing out on my ebay light fixture bid wars..yada freaking yada. You just pushed me into publishing some posts! Yes. Maybe I'll even toast you with a bean martini. ;)
ReplyDeleteps one of your friends emailed me asking about the Ruby shirt and I have it to send to her but can't find her email!

ReplyDeleteArden - We're through. Okay?
DeleteTotally. But just for the record, I was done three days ago when I deleted my comment per my mother's request shortly after I posted it. You exasperated the situation by re-posting my comment (pity party for you - SOMEONE doesn't like my style!) and then referenced it again in your newest post.
ReplyDeleteI won't be back. Promise.
I am so okay with you not liking my style. I don't fully understand your impulse to be angry about it, but I understand that my thing isn't everyone's thing. I didn't purchase anything for the room except for the curtains. I'm working with zero budget, using what I have. The end result makes me happy.
DeleteI routinely encounter people through this blog who do not share or support my opinions and interests. As long as things stay civil, I welcome the exchange. I get a difference in opinion. I don't get lashing out at someone because you think their style is bad.
You're right, I didn't need to mention it again today. I'll delete and we'll both move on.
Arden's mama says - For what it's worth I really enjoy your blog and think the room looks super neat. I also feel horrible that I showed my beloved but snarky (read: East Coast Snotty at this moment in her development) girl your blog. I just think you're precious and creative and wanted to share that with her.
ReplyDeleteI'm truly sorry for her words. One thing about my Arden is that when she makes a promise, she honors it. I'm sure she won't ever be on your site again.
God Bless you!
Julia
Hi Julia. :) Please don't spend one more minute feeling badly about any of this. It's completely okay. I tried to have a little fun with it...but now, on to greener pastures!
DeleteGorgeous, gorgeous, gorgeous! I want to WEAR those curtains and LIVE in that chair!!!!!!! SO PRETTY!!! :-D
ReplyDeleteI LOVE your curtains and your sign above the couch!! :) Very cute
ReplyDeleteI have a thing for vintage chairs, I so love your orange one! Love the fresh color scheme, it feels so cheery & light. The curtains are the perfect punch of pattern to bring it all together.
ReplyDeleteAn inspiration to the rest of us with a big fat ZERO budget!
ReplyDeleteReally cute!! I have been looking fOr new end tables, but don't have much of a budget, and I loooove the crate idea.
ReplyDeletegoodness. i am so far behind, but i do love that orange chair and your amazing curtains like yesterday’s business. even if they are yesterday’s business.
ReplyDelete
