We all know how that turned out.
So, here I am, in a falling-down bun, hopped up on Dr. Pepper and the tucked-in reminder that my people are the very best kind, they make me better, their kindness renders me speechless. It's a pleasure to iron their seam allowances hems of whatever they call them.
I guess I'd like to honor this feeling by coming clean on my secret.
It has to do with dark chocolate and awesomeness.
I know I caused a stir with the pumpkin spice english muffins (I weep for them in January) but this is year-round bliss. It's everyday-rotation trouble. It's pretty enough to serve to the Duchess of Cambridge. It's cheap enough to stockpile.
Behold.
They bring me crumbly tidings of delicious joy.
They could pretty much write their own title, but their given name is "Butter Keks".
Who knows why? Not me, that's who. What's a "kek"? Is it German? Because I feel like it could be. I would ask Cory, but all he remembers from HS German class is "I am tired" and numbers 1-10.
Regardless, I'm a girl who can really get behind a ridiculous name. So I first introduced them to my kids as "Butter Kek" and that's all they know. They think it's normal.
It's very possible that you will catch one of them whining on an otherwise peaceable afternoon, "I want Butter Kek!" waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah!
They do this in public sometimes and we get, you know, looks. And I get their angst. I really do.
There's a Dutch windmill, the Eiffel Tower and a large ferris wheel, presumably the fancy one that Emily and Jef kissed on and not the one from the Elkhart County 4-H Fair.
I cannot possibly make you understand the beauty of Butter Kek.
The chocolate is so perfectly dark, so beautifully dipped to the ideal thickness. The cookie is so superbly toothsome.
What you have here is a combo almost as harmonious as the chip and the salsa.
You can get your own for $1.69 a box at your local Aldi. Do you have an Aldi? Because if not, this is the meanest, nastiest post I have ever written. I can't imagine your pain.
So heck, leave me a comment and I'll pick two Butter Kek'ers. We'll crown you the Duchesses of Grand Luckiness and toast you with teacups, pinkies delightfully extended, of course.
But don't come crying to me when you're hooked on the junk.

Umm, I love those things. My parents are dutch you know, so I'm well-versed in delicious and terrible-for-you goodies bearing windmills :-)
ReplyDeleteAlso, HELP I need something new and wonderful to read! :-)
I want some right this second. Like right this second! I might have to go and find something sweet in the cupboards just because of you!
ReplyDeleteI will DEF be looking for these when I go to the store tomorrow. I hope they have them in AL, even if we don't have Aldis. I need a great dessert for our hot date on Saturday night -- take out and the Packers game! :-)
ReplyDeleteSeriously?! I had shopped at Aldi since they first came into being until 6 years ago when we moved out here in the boonies where there is no Aldi! They had no Butter Keks when I shopped there. They must have started selling them to spite me because I don't shop there anymore. Eat 2 or 10 for me!
ReplyDeleteI'm making coffee in expectation. Yum.
ReplyDeleteWell add this to the LONG list of reasons why I LOVE Aldi! I will look for these tomorrow when I am there :) Yum!
ReplyDeleteGirl, you crack me up.
ReplyDelete#totallyheadingtoaldi
I love Aldi's! $1.99 goat cheese logs? Yes, please. We bought 8 or 10 boxes of almond windmill cookies for R. Go Cafe Bistro!
ReplyDeleteThanks for not hoarding. another yummy thing to buy on my next trip to aldi. love shopping there!!
ReplyDeleteOh my word! Your glorious writing ( as always) has left my mouth watering like crazy. Crazy mad! These sound delicious. The name looks like a kiddie way to spell "cake" to me. :)
ReplyDeleteGreat. Now I'm going to be hooked on the dang keks.
ReplyDeleteYou're a real pal, Shan.
xxoo
Oh. my. gosh. I am SO going to Aldi's tomorrow. Thanks for the tip!
ReplyDeleteI work afternoon & I always peek around 10ish to see if you posted anything. Today I typed in FlowerPatchFarmGirl into my search & "But don't come crying to me when you're hooked on the junk." Comes up :) I had to see what you were talking about! I confess I thought it would be about Salsa <3
ReplyDeleteSyvilRott@zoominternet.net
Oh my word. You know what I love about them...they are just so neat and tidy. Crisp - even the chocolate stamping. Works of art even - I shan't partake of them because of the wheat and dairy - BUT - how odd that I was JUST thinking of this type of cookie today whilst cleaning house for a young mother of two. She had this little kids table placed on a hardwood floor and underneath the table were four chocolate colored squares to protect the floor. They looked like those chocolate covered graham cookies that I remember as a child. Oh, and as far as your cookie goes - The Leibniz-Keks is a plain butter biscuit, or Butterkeks as it is known in German, inspired by the French Petit beurre created in 1886 by Lefèvre-Utile. You're welcome.
ReplyDeleteOh, and a PS - I'm sure that they enjoy the imported Butterkek on Downton Abbey. Free Bates!
ReplyDeleteHe is guilty!! Am I the only one who hates bates?!?
DeleteAlso no aldi so I pretty much hate everyone now
Bates guilty??? NOOOOOO
DeleteI think you just MAY be the only one who hates Bates?!?! HAHA
I'm beginning to have some doubts about Bates....and believe me, I don't want to have doubts.
DeleteOh yes, Butter Keks are delish! I enjoy them so much that I don't dare keep them in the house. But, come to think of it, they would make a nice little indulgence for those I-need-something-sweet cravings. Maybe, just maybe, I should grow some courage and self-discipline so they would be safe to have in my cupboard again.
ReplyDeleteButter Keks sound amazing! Sign me up!
ReplyDeleteLove those things.
ReplyDeleteTop shelf in the pantry for sure.
Even the 6' tall exchange student knows that the top shelf is off limits to the kids!
Never heard of them. We don't have Aldis. I wonder if HEB has them? You can bet I will be looking.
ReplyDeleteBlessings,
Lorilee
Oh Aldi I love thee....Butter Keks or no.
ReplyDeleteMy life goal is to make Aldi the posh place to do groceries.
Or something like that...
These look amazing. It's too bad I'm on a diet. Makes me want them even more.
ReplyDelete~FringeGirl
I am so glad you did not go to the grave with this secret indulgence. I will be on the look out for them thanks to this delicious post. :)
ReplyDeleteThis IS the meanest nastiest post!!!
ReplyDeletemean.nasty.you.
ReplyDeletebut i shall check safeway just in case.
Oh sister, I'm already cryin'...I don't know Aldi and the fact of the matter is my Canuck status probably means I can't track the suckers down.
ReplyDeleteTry Leclerc's Celebration Cookies! Sounds the same and are super yummy!
DeleteThinkin' that Butter "keks" is same as CAKE?? don't quote me on that... just seems right! yummmmmmmmy
ReplyDeleteI'm pretty much feeling ripped off right now -- I've never even heard of keks and I don't think there is an Aldi in my whole entire state.
ReplyDeleteI love Aldi, but I have yet to try these Keks. Now I am actually looking forward to grocery shopping next week. :). Also I have hoarded in my fridge pumpkin spice cream cheese which I forgot about amidst all the sickness here, and now I fear it might be expired. Sigh
ReplyDeleteI have never heard of keks or Aldi. I really want to try them though. And I am totally on board with the dark chocolate. I am not sure why the other exists. :)
ReplyDeletesarah
Sniff. No Aldi around my parts. I know a few people who would LOVE those "keks".
ReplyDeleteNope. Not doing it. Still hopped up on that crack bark you sold me! :)
ReplyDeleteAh, the crunch of the biscuit combined with the smooth, creamy dark chocolate... pure bliss!
ReplyDeleteYour cookie reminds me of the Choco Leibniz I enjoy from time to time. When I wikied it, I saw a picture of the biscuit with the word butterkeks on the back, (I never noticed it before— probably too busy inhaling it) AND a little background history of the word. Basically, the Germans stole it from the English and changed the spelling a tad.
What makes yours better is the pricing! I had to google it to find the closest one (7.7 miles away) I might have to take a field trip to an Aldi's and hunt a box or two down.
oh happy day! I found an Aldi, now to take joy ride to hunt down some Butter Keks. I do hope they are NOTHING like Pepperidge Farms chocolate dipped cookie....yuck!
ReplyDeleteIn England, this is chocolate leibniz as you previous poster says. This might be because kecks is Liverpool slang for trousers! It might be a sailor's term I think, my grandad always said it.
ReplyDeleteUummm, they look UH-MAY-ZING!!!!! We do have an Aldi, its not super close nor super far and we don't really shop there, but we just may have to start, just for this!!!!
ReplyDeleteAnd btw, how did you get so stinking UH-MAY-ZING!!! Gosh I love reading your posts, you slay me with your quirky words and style and you're just so stinkin real!!!! We would get along famously in the non-computer/face-to-face world, I just know we would!!!!
My mom brought these home from a quick trip to Aldi when she was visiting this past summer. YUM! I have to avert my eyes when I walk past them each week. I could eat the whole box by myself so I can't bring them home on a regular basis.
ReplyDeleteYes, "Keks" is German and basically just means cracker. It is always a "Keks" (with the "s") - whether it's just one or the whole shebang. :-) And yes, they are soooo yummy... ;-)
ReplyDeleteOh my - have never tried these. My husband is in love with an Aldi (milk) chocolate bar, though. My latest "must have" is Pepperidge Farm Goldfish SOFT BREAD -- in the cinnamon variety, please. There's no need to talk about how many of these fish are consumed in one day. NO NEED. Sorry, didn't mean to be overly sensitive. I must be "due" for another fish. We get them at a local grocery outlet for $1/8pk. They are $3+ in the regular stores. Go forth and TRY them. Amen -- and have a great day.
ReplyDeleteOk... so I'm now heading to Aldi in 51 minutes to be the first in line! ;)
ReplyDeleteoh no we have no Aldi down here in Dog Patch USA!!! Oh and the looked up tanslation and they say it is German for buttercream, makes sense. I do "need" a box of these for sure. Nancy Settel sheepishgrin92@yahoo.com
ReplyDeleteOh man. I read that whole post dying to see where to get them! We don't have an Aldi! To quote a little one, "I want Butter Kek!" waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah!"
ReplyDeleteYum!
ReplyDeleteI love butter cookies. I love dark chocolate. I love Aldi. Nuf said.
ReplyDeleteI love you! I know that's strange coming from a sister you've never met but you either challenge me or crack me up with each of your posts and I am grateful forevermore!
ReplyDeletePick me. Pick me :)
ReplyDeleteI promised I'd have tea in my Queen's Diamond Jubilee mug and keep my pinkie in the air while I feast.
Ahhhh man, NO Aldi and NO Keks.....I guess I can't call you nasty, it just doesn't fit.
ReplyDeleteAs soon as I saw the pic I thought - I'm sure I can buy those at Aldi! Great to know that all Aldis , worldwide, stock the sans yummies!
ReplyDeleteThey are perfect for dunking in sweet milky tea :-) yum. Off to put these on my shopping list x
Same yummies. Silly auto correct x
DeleteIts not "Kek", lol. ;-) Keks means cookie and plural would be Kekse. It's a simple butter cookie we have in Germany and you can get it plain, wholegrain, or with dark, mild or white chocolate. It's the most basic cookie we have here. Another version would be "Prinzenrolle" which I'm sure you can get in Aldi (which is German!) too. It's a cookie sandwich with a chocolate layer in the middle and kids love them.
ReplyDeletePS: the ferris wheel would probably be the one from Vienna in Austria!
ReplyDeleteIf you don't have an Aldi, World Market sells similar cookies, and many many grocery stores sell them in their cookie sections. My Target even stocks them here in the midwest.
ReplyDeleteLike Becky, I used to eat them when I lived in Germany. Now I buy them here (yay!) but have to hide them from my kids. Absolutely good enough to hoard.
Oh my yes, these are the best cookies! I was kinda sad that my daughter wanted to try one because then I couldn't eat the whole box myself. :( Thankfully she doesn't like my dark chocolate m&m's so those are all mine. Muhahaha!
ReplyDeleteI'm going to Aldi today, but I'm not sure if I should pick up a box. Because it sounds like if I do, there will be NO.turning.back!
ReplyDeleteCruelty!! Not only do we not have an Aldi, I don't even know what one is! Those cookies look like perfection to me. Dark chocolate and butter are my love languages.
ReplyDeleteThat is worth a quick comment! Thanks for the chance to win my very own!
ReplyDeleteNo Aldi here and I'm sure that if we had one they would be $3.69 here, because that is just how we roll out here in Los Angeles!
ReplyDeleteI must live under a rock because I haven't even seen them. =P They look delish though and oh so pretty!! :)
ReplyDeleteI must have some! They look pretty too. Have you tried Aldi's mascara? It's the best!
ReplyDeleteAlways willing to try a new cookie with chocolate. Aldi is accessible here but not convenient to me. Thanks for the giveaway.
ReplyDeleteThey are called Leibniz biscuits here in the UK, pretty sure they are German. Utterly yum and widely available here, lucky us. X
ReplyDeletePlease send me some Butter Kek's How I do love dark chocolate and I will pick them up in person and get a tour of yoru house..eh?
ReplyDeleteAlways up for another mini-vice!! Plus the name rocks. xo
ReplyDeleteNo Aldi but I will be on the hunt this weekend to find them somewhere in the Pacific Northwest! I love dark chocolate and paired with a butter cookie?! Sigh...I will not think you mean if I fail to find them but could make you jealous with the fact that I hid (hoarded)one package of pumpkin spice english muffins in the back of my freezer :)
ReplyDeleteI am going to rock your world but we used similar cookies (french ones) for smores when camping this past summer...so much better than graham crackers. try it...I double dog dare you!
ReplyDeleteWOW, I don't know about farmgirl, but you have rocked MY world, nicole! I want a s'more! WAAAAHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Deletei have had one once. my hips thank me.
ReplyDeleteeat some for me? you don't mind, right??
Yum! No WAY! My family is Scandinavian ~ my Mom isn't even American born. Consequentially, I grew up with something called Krem Kex. It was a square, butter cookie that had a skim of the most delightful frosting between two of them. Unfortunately, they changed the filling about 15 years ago to a fluffy, waxy, film-coating-your-mouth grossness. I've grieved ever since.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you on dark vs. milk. I'm gonna try them. Thanks for divulging the goodness!!
Kate
What in the world is Aldi? Sounds stranger than Butter Kek. Obviously I have neither. :( :( :(
ReplyDeleteOh, mama! I have an Aldi. And I'm doing a 6 week diet thingy....torture. But I might just have to cheat on by Birthday with a whole ( i mean a couple of)....um...cookies. Shoot!
ReplyDeleteDang it. I literally just walked in from Aldi - one of their pizzas is in my oven for the children's dinner. I'm going to feast on salsa and chips and salad. I still have my coat on. But I am NOT leaving this house - even though I want me some Butter Kek. How have I missed these? I'm sure it's because I force myself to breeze by the decadent section and go straight to dairy. WAAAAH! I want some butter kek!
ReplyDeleteHmm....never heard of Aldis, but those look GREAT!!! Anything with chocolate would have to be good!!!
ReplyDeleteI've, never had them, but they sound delish! Would love to try them.
ReplyDeleteI immediately knew what they were because I am NEVER without one spare unopened box in my pantry. It's been that way for 23 years. Even in college when I ate Raman and Mac N Cheese. It started when I found them at 13 in Europe on a backpacking trip. I think I brought 10 boxes back and shared them with NO ONE. I try to be a good Christian, but it doesn't extend to Butter Kek.
ReplyDeleteNow that they're available in the states, buying 'em here since mid-90's, I'm a little better. And when they came out with the chocolate ones? BE. STILL. MY. HEART!!!!!
Still, if you come to my house and I offer you a Butter Kek, you really know you're loved.
Love you for loving your Butter Keks.
If I knew how to update wikipedia I would. "Kek" in Malaysia and Indonesia is "cake." But since the Dutch colonized Indonesia, I wouldn't be surprised if they actually took the word "Keks" there from Europe. I've always thought it was just their way of saying the English word for cake...kinda like they have "teksi" written on the side of every Taxi. Kek and Teksi...fair trade considering they gave us "Ketchup" and "orangutan." Why am I talking about this?.........
ReplyDeleteI'll be looking for some butterkeks next time I go to the import grocery store!
If you don't have an Aldi, the French Petit Ecolier (ie. Little Schoolboy) is an equally delicious alternative available at gourmetish stores and even our local Ingles (large supermarket) for about $4 a box. Yes, that's nearly 3x the cost. Love Aldi!!!
ReplyDeleteGlad I've come across your blog through my sister-in-law, Abby. Your photos and writings are wonderful treasures.
ReplyDeleteThis is my Dawn! Hi Dawn!
DeleteAlso, I kind of read this too fast the first time and though you were going to have a little party with the kids where you'd eat 2 Butter Keks in our honor. But a giveaway is so much cooler.
Also, my senior year, the German exchange student at our school turned out to be one of my very best friends. Her mom would send her these cookies from time to time (except they were the Liebnez variety or however you spell it) and she'd share them with me. You can't even imagine the thrill of finding them here at home! Ahhh. But I'm with the others who've paid twice that! So Aldi, here we come. We have one and I've never been! Thanks for the heads up there.
Hope you're having a fantastic, Butter Kek filled weekend. Good for you for the treadmill business, too. It is not nearly as fun as cooking/eating, but I hear it's pretty good for you. Blech.
*thought you were going to... Geesh. Again, this is Mike.
Deletejust added to aldi grocery list...i will be going tomorrow!
ReplyDeleteUm... Yum... haha! pick me! pick me!!!
ReplyDeleteMy fear: that I will eat the whole box, alone, in a corner in less than a few hours.
ReplyDeleteBut what the heck! I enter myself into your butter Kirk giveaway. If it's meant to be, I shall gladly eat myself into a sugar conniption.
Peace out,
TT
Lol.. "Kek" not "Kirk"!
ReplyDeleteIt's times like these I wish I didn't live in Asia...
ReplyDeleteYou're hilarious and you make me smile. I'm tempted to try them, though the last time I took your food advice I got hooked on crack bark. I don't know how many times I've made it since you posted the recipe! :)
ReplyDeleteHope you have a lovely weekend.
I went to Aldi for the first time today. These cookies were the first things I saw (translate: quickly grabbed and threw into my cart to eat as soon as I got into my car)!
ReplyDeleteAs long as we're making confessions, if I start following the blog of a stranger and don't introduce myself, I start to feel a little like a peeping Tom. Since I "peek" at your blog anytime I need a little pick-me-up, I feel like it's only fair to introduce myself. This is me: www.windowtowhimsy.blogspot.com (well, technically, the about section is 3 years and one child out of date, but it's pretty much me). Thanks for the laugh. P.s. I think you just insured that this company never goes out of business and that the cookies keep coming.
ReplyDeleteWent to Aldi after reading your post and picked up a box of Butter Keks. My first impression was..."...ehhhh, they're alright." But that was less than 24 hours ago, and the box is now sitting beside me empty. I'm going to blame the first impression on having to go grocery shopping in an ice storm.
ReplyDeleteYou are right. They are delicious. Thank you for introducing me.
I'm all about anything and everything that has to do with chocolate. And windmills. So in the words of Meredith Grey, choose me. Pick me. Love me.
ReplyDeletePlease!
Siley is so cute.
No Aldis here... I love you and hate you all at once. Mean. And my 4 kids all looked at the post over my shoulder and said those cookies look "yummy", and now I am the mean mommy for telling them we can't by them here in the frozen tundra of South Dakota...
ReplyDeleteNo Aldis. No fun. jclarke@hollins.edu
ReplyDeleteDo I have an Aldi? I don't know but look for and go to Aldi just made it to my to do list. Evil lady.
ReplyDeleteI'm so excited! These look amazing. The weird thing is I have seen these at Aldi's and never picked them up because they were not on my list. I am now adding them to my list! Thanks! TB
ReplyDeleteI routinely go in to Aldi's and had noticed the cookies, but never gotten them. I went in today, and bought a box. Noticed they have them in milk chocolate or the dark chocolate. I bought a box of the dark chocolate, and started eating them, and had a hard time stopping! They are delicious, and I think I cannot have them around! Thanks for filling me in...I will get them again someday, and hope they will last longer! I love hearing about your family and thanks for sharing! Have a great weekend...
ReplyDelete
